2013 Historic Sandown
The 2013 Historic Sandown was promoted with the slogan “Return of the Thunder”. It proved to be very appropriate given Melbourne’s weather that weekend!
Despite this, there were many cool cars at the show, particularly from the Ferrari Club. The roll call of models present sounds like the car equivalent of a greatest hits collection: Dino, Daytona, F40, Testarossa, 458 and more!
There was not one but several Dino’s present, including the recent ‘barn find’ 1973 246GT featured in Unique Cars, which is to be restored by HVR Australia. I thought that numberplate looked familiar… Speaking of HVR, check out
the camber of the wheels on the 1965 Alfa GT 105 Giulia Sprint driven by the beautiful Dominique Chaleyer!
One thing which I was reminded of constantly as the classic racing cars went around the track was just how small they used to be. Such as the lovely yellow 1963 Elfin Mallala, which I thought looked very sculptural.

Ultra minimalist racing interior. Check out the exposed mechanisms!

When a hand sized car camera looks large on a racing car, you know it’s small!

One of Ferrari’s masterpieces, the Daytona. You don’t see many of these around.

Carbonfibre wheel hub cap. Hmmm… that’s going to save about as much weight as not having a donut with your coffee 🙂

Still one of the most distinctive car designs of all time. Purposeful, no nonsense styling.

The ‘barn find’ 246GT Dino featured in Unique Cars. Being a late model it has enlarged Group 4-style flared wheelarches.

Some cars look fast even when they’re going still…

If this yellow paintwork was any brighter you could see it from the moon!

This shot shows how close the engine of the Renault Alpine is to the exterior. A rare opportunity to see into the engine bay of one.
